A coalition of women's groups, civil society organisations, community-based organisations, youth groups and other stakeholders in Bauchi State has withdrawn its endorsement of the governorship aspiration of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, the People's Redemption Party (PRP) candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The groups announced their decision in a statement signed by Hajiya Halima Nuhu Mohammed, citing dissatisfaction with the process that led to the selection of the party's deputy governorship candidate.
According to the coalition, its earlier support for Senator Shehu Buba was based on the expectation that the principles of justice, inclusiveness, consultation and equity would guide major decisions within the party.
The statement alleged that the choice of a running mate was made without meaningful consultation with key stakeholders, particularly women, who had consistently advocated for greater representation and inclusion throughout the selection process.
"Our support for Senator Shehu Buba Umar was based on the expectation that the principles of justice, inclusiveness, consultation and equity would guide critical decisions. Unfortunately, the process leading to the selection of his deputy failed to reflect these values and ignored the legitimate aspirations of women across Bauchi State who had worked tirelessly for the success of the project," the statement read.
While acknowledging the candidate's constitutional right to choose a running mate, the coalition said it also reserves the democratic right to reconsider its political support when such decisions no longer align with the values and expectations of its members.
The coalition reaffirmed its support for Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi, who had sought the PRP deputy governorship ticket alongside six other aspirants.
It described Baheejah as a grassroots politician, women mobiliser and advocate for vulnerable groups, noting that her years of humanitarian service and community development initiatives have earned her widespread support across the state.
The groups further recalled her role in the establishment of the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency during the administration of former Governor Isa Yuguda, describing her as a leader committed to social justice, women empowerment and grassroots development.
According to the statement, many political stakeholders had believed that Baheejah's emergence as the party's deputy governorship candidate would have strengthened the PRP's political structure, promoted gender inclusion and expanded its grassroots support ahead of the 2027 elections.
The coalition urged Baheejah not to be discouraged by the outcome of the selection process, assuring her of its continued support.
It also pledged to stand by her in any lawful and democratic political decision she takes in pursuit of what it described as the progress of Bauchi State and the advancement of women, children and vulnerable groups.
"Our movement was never built around personalities alone; it was built around the principles of justice, inclusion, competence and service. Those principles remain unchanged," the coalition stated.
