The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc (+), has warned police personnel in the state against extortion, prolonged detention of suspects, torture and other forms of human rights abuses.
The commissioner gave the warning during his operational tour of the Misau and Azare Area Commands as part of efforts to assess operational readiness and strengthen professionalism across the command.
The tour, which was conducted in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, also focused on discipline, community-oriented policing, respect for citizens' rights and improved relations between the police and the communities they serve.
During the tour, CP Aliyu visited the Misau Area Command, which oversees Misau, Giade, Darazo and Dambam Divisions, before proceeding to the Azare Area Command, comprising Azare, Gamawa, Itas, Yana, Zaki, Jama'are, Gadau and Bulkachuwa Divisions.
The commissioner also inspected the newly established Sakwa Division, which commenced operations on the day of the visit.
At the various formations, the commissioner interacted with police officers and men and held meetings with Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers. The engagements were also attended by representatives of sister security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), as well as members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), quasi-security organisations and community stakeholders.
CP Aliyu urged personnel to strictly adhere to the Force's Social Media Policy and warned them against using their positions to extort members of the public or violate their fundamental rights.
He also cautioned officers against partisan political activities, stressing the need for the police to remain professional, disciplined and impartial in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The commissioner further emphasised punctuality, neatness, discipline and professionalism, while charging Divisional Police Officers to strengthen community engagement and intelligence gathering.
According to him, effective community policing remains critical to intelligence-led policing and the prevention of crime, particularly amid emerging security challenges.
He also called for stronger collaboration among security agencies, noting that inter-agency cooperation was essential to effectively tackle contemporary security threats in the state.
As part of the tour, the commissioner inspected police facilities and assessed operational challenges and welfare needs confronting personnel. He assured officers that identified challenges would be addressed to improve their working conditions, morale and efficiency.
The CP also paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Misau, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmad Sulaiman, mni, at his palace, where he sought the continued support and cooperation of the traditional institution in strengthening security and effective policing in the emirate.
In response, the Emir assured the commissioner of his blessings and continued cooperation in supporting security efforts within the area.
CP Aliyu subsequently charged police personnel to maintain professionalism throughout the ongoing Operation Velvet and reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting lives and property across Bauchi State.
He also solicited the continued support and cooperation of traditional rulers, community leaders, security agencies and other stakeholders in the collective effort to maintain peace and security in the state.
