The Bauchi State Police Command has foiled an alleged attempt to steal eight cows in Darazo Local Government Area of the state, recovering the animals and an abandoned getaway vehicle.
The incident occurred at about 2:58 a.m. on September 3, 2026, following a tip-off from a vigilant resident who alerted the police to the suspected cattle rustling operation.
According to the command, the suspects were allegedly seen loading cows into a Chevrolet saloon car with registration number DAS 452 NE.
The command said two cows had already been loaded into the vehicle, while six others were tethered nearby and awaiting loading when police operatives attached to Darazo Division arrived at the scene.
On sighting the police, the suspected rustlers reportedly abandoned the vehicle and the animals and fled into the darkness.
Police operatives subsequently recovered the Chevrolet saloon car with two cows inside, while the remaining six cows were found tethered close to the scene, bringing the total number of recovered cattle to eight.
The command said efforts were made to identify the rightful owner of the cattle, who was subsequently allowed to take custody of the animals on bond.
Meanwhile, the police said an intensive manhunt had been launched for the fleeing suspects, with a view to arresting and prosecuting them.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the resident whose tip-off led to the recovery, describing the action as an example of responsible community participation in crime prevention.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
The commissioner also reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating cattle rustling and other economic crimes, while protecting lives, property and livestock across Bauchi State.
