The Bauchi State Police Command has ordered a discreet and thorough investigation into allegations by a police corporal, Yusuf Aliyu, that he had been unable to access his salary for the past two years.
The command said the investigation was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, following a letter attributed to the officer and circulated on social media, in which he also announced his purported resignation from the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the command said preliminary findings indicated that the officer’s salary had been paid promptly and consistently by the police authorities.
It attributed the officer’s inability to access the funds to an alleged discrepancy in his Bank Verification Number (BVN), explaining that the name associated with the BVN differed from the name on his salary account.
According to the command, the discrepancy resulted in the restriction of the officer’s bank account.
The police, however, said the commissioner had directed that the circumstances surrounding the alleged restriction be thoroughly investigated to establish the facts and ensure that the matter was properly resolved.
The command expressed concern that the officer chose to publicise his grievance and announce his purported resignation through social media instead of using the established internal administrative channels for addressing complaints.
It described the action as a violation of the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy and an attempt to discredit the command and the Force.
The commissioner, according to the statement, reassured officers and men that their welfare remained a top priority under his leadership, stressing that genuine complaints would receive appropriate attention.
CP Aliyu also urged police personnel to comply strictly with the Force's Social Media Policy and channel grievances through the appropriate administrative procedures for prompt resolution.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism and the welfare of its personnel as they discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
