The political landscape in Bauchi State may be witnessing a fresh realignment following the reported defection of thousands of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
The defectors, mobilised under the auspices of the Hon. Umar Farouk Adam Support Group, gathered at the MHWUN Complex in Bauchi on Saturday to formally announce their decision to leave the PDP and join the PRP.
Organisers put the number of defectors at between 60,000 and 70,000, although no independent figure was provided to verify the claim.
The group attributed its decision to what it described as dissatisfaction with unfulfilled campaign promises, inadequate empowerment initiatives and perceived neglect of youths and communities under the previous administration.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its leader, Umar Farouk Adam, said the decision was driven by the desire to support a political platform which, according to him, would provide better representation and greater opportunities for the people.
The defectors subsequently declared their support for Senator Shehu Buba Umar, whom they described as a grassroots politician committed to the welfare of his constituents.
They cited his interventions and engagement with communities as some of the factors that strengthened their confidence in his leadership.
Receiving the defectors on behalf of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, the PRP gubernatorial candidate's deputy, Hon. Tijjani Aliyu Madangala, who is also the Majority Leader of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, commended their decision to join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Madangala described the development as a significant boost to the PRP and a timely step towards reshaping the political landscape in the state.
He assured the new members of equal treatment within the party and pledged that the leadership would work with them towards strengthening the party's structure and achieving its political objectives ahead of the 2027 presidential and gubernatorial elections.
The event also featured the formal declaration of defection by the supporters and their acceptance into the PRP.
Meanwhile, political leaders at the gathering urged young people not to rely solely on partisan politics as a means of livelihood.
They encouraged youths to acquire vocational and professional skills, pursue education and establish businesses as pathways to economic independence.
The latest development is expected to generate further political discussions in Bauchi State as political activities and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to intensify.
