No fewer than five million households across Bauchi State are expected to benefit from the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets as the state government intensifies efforts to reduce malaria infections and deaths.
The distribution exercise is scheduled to take place between September and October 2026, with officials expected to visit households and issue collection cards ahead of the distribution.
The Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (BACATMA), Dr. Adamu Sambo, disclosed this at a media parley in Bauchi on Monday.
He said the number of mosquito nets allocated to each household would be determined by the number of rooms in the house.
According to him, the strategy would ensure that households receive adequate mosquito nets based on their needs.
The Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam, said the exercise was part of the state government’s broader efforts to eliminate malaria.
Represented by the Director in the ministry, Samira Muhammad, Dambam urged residents to properly utilise the nets after receiving them.
He also called on the media to educate and enlighten the public on the importance of sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
To ensure transparency, the government has enlisted community leaders, religious leaders and security personnel to monitor the distribution exercise.
The Director of BACATMA, Muhammad Isah Bello, said the monitoring mechanism would help prevent diversion, hoarding and illegal sale of the free nets.
He added that anyone found selling or hoarding the nets would face strict legal action.
Development partners, including Malaria Consortium, Society for Family Health and Against Malaria Foundation, commended the state government for supporting efforts to eliminate malaria.
