From Nasir Shuaibu, BAUCHI
The Bauchi State Government has called on parents, community leaders, religious institutions, development partners and the private sector to join hands in empowering young people and creating an enabling environment for them to succeed.
The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Budget, Planning and Multilateral Coordination, Hajiya Amina Muhammad Katagum, during the 2026 World Population Day celebration organised in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
She said investing in young people remained critical to achieving sustainable development, noting that Bauchi's growing youthful population presents enormous opportunities for innovation and economic transformation.
Katagum emphasised that government would continue to prioritise education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, employment, digital literacy and social protection while strengthening population data systems and birth registration for better planning.
UNFPA Country Representative, Madam Muriel Mafico, praised the state government's commitment to population and development initiatives and pledged the agency's continued collaboration in implementing programmes that would harness the demographic potential of Bauchi's youth.
The event, held under the theme "Realizing the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People – Today and for the Future," featured a paper presentation by Dr. Jamilu Yahaya and a panel discussion with young participants.
More than 100 youths from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State University, the NYSC, Schools of Nursing and Agriculture, security agencies, government ministries and organisations of persons with disabilities attended the programme.
