A 40-year-old man has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command over the alleged murder of a community leader during a shooting incident in Unguwar Angas area of Bauchi metropolis.
The suspect, identified as Clement Anthony, is also being investigated for the unlawful possession of a locally made firearm allegedly used in the attack.
Police said the incident occurred on the evening of July 19, 2026, at Unguwar Angas, Inkil, Bauchi, where the suspect allegedly shot Jacob Bature, the Mai Anguwan Ngas, with a locally made single-barrel gun.
According to the Command, the victim sustained severe gunshot injuries to the right side of his chest and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he was confirmed dead by doctors.
His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending further investigation.
The Police said officers attached to the 'A' Division, Township, responded swiftly to the incident and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards.
A locally made single-barrel firearm and an expended cartridge were recovered from him during the operation.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation, while the suspect is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and reaffirmed the Command's determination to ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.
He also warned members of the public against the unlawful possession of firearms and urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly to security agencies.
The police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
