The Bauchi State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the custody of Jennifer Joseph, also known as Fatima, following concerns and reports circulating on social media.
The Command, in a statement issued on Sunday, said the girl was found in Bauchi and subsequently reported to the ‘E’ Divisional Police Headquarters, Yelwa, where investigations into her circumstances commenced.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations established that Jennifer was a student of Bishara Dole Missionary School, Yelwa, from where she reportedly ran away.
The girl, who stated that she is from Adamawa State, reportedly told investigators that she had converted to Islam in Adamawa through her grandmother before she was brought to the missionary school by an individual.
The Police further explained that, following a request by the girl’s parents and the Da'awah Committee, she was temporarily placed in the custody of the Bauchi State Orphanage and Vulnerable Children Agency.
The Command said the arrangement was made to provide a neutral environment for the girl pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Both parties involved have been directed to report to the Police Command on Monday, August 24, 2026, for continuation of the investigation.
The Police urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information concerning the matter, warning that such publications could undermine the investigation and potentially affect the peace being maintained in the state.
The Command also appealed to concerned citizens to remain calm and exercise restraint while the investigation continues.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc (+), reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting the lives and property of citizens and ensuring their safety.
He also commended the leadership of both faith communities for their maturity, cooperation and understanding in allowing the investigation to proceed peacefully.
