A coalition of women's groups and civil society organisations in Bauchi State has endorsed Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi (Mai Dankwali) for the position of deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coalition, comprising the Women Coalition for Sustainable Peace and Viable Democratic Gains, the Baheejah Mahmood Support Association (BAMASA) and representatives of more than 2,600 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the state, announced its position in a statement issued in Bauchi.
The statement, signed by Hajiya Halima Nuhu Mohammed, said the endorsement followed consultations among members of the coalition and other stakeholders.
According to the coalition, the PRP's philosophy of justice, equity, accountability, inclusion and good governance aligns with the values Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi have demonstrated through years of public service.
The groups expressed confidence that a Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi ticket would provide inclusive and people-centred leadership capable of promoting peace, grassroots development and improved governance in Bauchi State.
They said their endorsement was based on Baheejah's track record in humanitarian service, women and youth empowerment, peacebuilding and community development across the state's 20 local government areas.
The coalition noted that Baheejah had devoted many years to supporting women, children, orphans and other vulnerable groups through various intervention programmes, describing her as a grassroots politician with extensive experience in public service.
It also recalled her role in the establishment of the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency during the administration of former Governor Isa Yuguda.
The coalition further appealed to the leadership of the PRP to consider gender balance in selecting its deputy governorship candidate, arguing that Baheejah's experience, leadership qualities and widespread grassroots support would strengthen the party's chances in the 2027 governorship election.
The groups also called on civil society organisations, women and youth groups, faith-based organisations and professional associations to support what they described as a campaign for inclusive leadership and greater participation of women in governance.
They maintained that greater representation of women in leadership would enhance decision-making and contribute to sustainable development in Bauchi State.
