The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), marking the third arrest of an alleged impersonator by the Command within one week.
The suspect, Mustapha Yahaya, a resident of Ran Road, Bauchi, was apprehended in the early hours of Sunday during a routine patrol by operatives of the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in the Bayan Gari area of Bauchi metropolis.
According to the Police, the suspect was intercepted at about 1:00 a.m. and, during interrogation, claimed to be a serving operative of the DSS in Bauchi State.
However, preliminary investigations revealed that the claim was false, as the suspect was neither a member of the DSS nor affiliated with the security agency.
The Police said the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation. He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, cautioned members of the public against falling victim to impostors, urging them to always demand proper identification from individuals claiming to be security personnel.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the Command's determination to rid Bauchi State of criminal elements and warned that anyone found impersonating security agencies or engaging in other criminal activities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
