The Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD), a Bauchi-based civil society organisation, is set to collaborate with the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) project at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, to strengthen evidence-based reporting on child health and mortality.
The partnership aims to build journalists’ capacity to accurately report on child health issues, interpret scientific research and communicate public health information in ways that support informed decision-making and public awareness.
Speaking during an advocacy visit to the CHAMPS office, J4PD Executive Director Elizabeth Kah said the media plays a vital role in improving health outcomes through accurate and evidence-based reporting.
She explained that the collaboration would enhance communication between researchers and journalists while ensuring that CHAMPS research findings are presented in a clear and accessible manner for policymakers, development partners and communities.
According to her, the initiative would also promote advocacy for policies and interventions that reduce preventable child deaths.
Responding, the Principal Investigator of CHAMPS in Bauchi, Dr. Bashir Farouk Mohammed, welcomed the initiative and described the media as a critical partner in translating scientific evidence into public action.
He explained that the Gates Foundation-supported project operates in eight countries and investigates the causes of child deaths and stillbirths using advanced diagnostic methods to generate reliable evidence for improving child survival and informing health policies.
Dr. Mohammed pledged CHAMPS’ support for the partnership, particularly in evidence-based advocacy, media capacity building and the dissemination of research findings to policymakers and other stakeholders.
