The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the machete attack on an 18-year-old student of Government Day Secondary School, Miri, and launched a manhunt for three others still at large.
The incident occurred on July 15 at Birindi, Sabon Kauran Lafiyari area of Bauchi, where the student was reportedly attacked while returning home from school.
According to the Police, the victim's father reported the incident at the 'B' Division, GRA Bauchi, alleging that two young men, armed with machetes, intercepted his son and demanded to know where he was coming from before one of them inflicted a deep cut on his left hand and fled the scene.
Police operatives responded immediately by evacuating the injured student to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
The Command said officers also visited the scene of the attack, while the victim was able to identify the suspects.
Following an intensive investigation, detectives arrested three suspects identified as Aliyu Abubakar, 23; Mubarak Muhammad, 18; and Salisu Abubakar, popularly known as "Ustas," 22, all residents of Wuntin Dada, Bauchi.
Police also recovered dangerous weapons believed to have been used in the attack.
However, three other suspects identified as Ismail, alias "Matsala," Abba Sarkin Fawa and Sagir, alias "Kwalba," are currently on the run, with security operatives intensifying efforts to apprehend them.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the attack and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
He also ordered a full-scale manhunt for the fleeing suspects, assuring residents that the Command would ensure everyone involved in the attack is brought to justice.
The police commissioner urged parents, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around schools and residential communities to security agencies.
He also appealed to anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects to assist the police as investigations continue.
