A 45-year-old man is in police custody in Bauchi following his arrest for the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in the state capital, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Muhammad Makama, was apprehended after the victim’s 32-year-old mother reported the incident to the 'E' Division Police Station in Yelwa on Sunday night, July 5, 2026.
According to police reports, the mother, who lives in the Dorawan Dillalai neighborhood of Bauchi, stated that Makama lured the young girl into his room earlier that afternoon and assaulted her.
The incident sparked immediate outrage in the local community. Angry neighbors reportedly attacked Makama before police operatives arrived at the scene.
Officers rescued the suspect and escorted him to the Police Clinic for medical treatment alongside the young victim, who was taken to the same facility for medical evaluation and care. Makama has since been discharged from the clinic and returned to police custody.
The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the assault in strong terms, describing it as an egregious act. He assured the public and the victim's family that the command would ensure a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution under the law.
CP Aliyu also appealed to parents, guardians, and neighbors to remain deeply vigilant about the safety of children in their communities and to report any warning signs to law enforcement immediately.
The case has been transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi for further investigation.
