The Media Sub-Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) 2025 National Convention has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the judiciary to demonstrate a high sense of patriotism and professionalism in the discharge of their duties to ensure a peaceful and credible convention.
In a statement issued to journalists, the committee expressed concerns that some elements allegedly loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were attempting to frustrate the party’s forthcoming national convention, either by ensuring it does not hold or by seeking its indefinite postponement.
According to the statement, “These fears are not unfounded. Going by the APC’s antecedents, the possibility of using inter- and intra-party disruptive elements to thwart the PDP’s convention billed for November cannot be ruled out. Covertly or overtly, these elements may go to any extent to serve the selfish interests of their masters in the APC. They must, however, be reminded that nemesis will surely catch up with them sooner or later.”
The committee alleged that such maneuvers were part of a broader plan to manipulate the 2027 general elections and pave the way for a one-party state, warning that this could endanger Nigeria’s democracy.
“The PDP places confidence in the new INEC Chairman but will continue to monitor closely the actions and inactions of the commission before, during, and after the elections,” the statement read.
It also expressed concern over the possible misuse of the Nigeria Police Force to disrupt lawful political gatherings, urging all relevant institutions to resist being used for partisan purposes.
“For these and many other reasons, the judiciary, INEC, the police, and all other organizations responsible for the conduct of elections must uphold professionalism, fairness, and equity to all political parties,” the committee said.
The PDP Media Sub-Committee further stated that democracy thrives on the presence of a vibrant opposition, which serves as a check on the ruling party and provides alternative solutions.
“Where the opposition is being strangulated, it means the voices of the people are being stifled,” the statement added. “In Nigeria today, it is becoming an open secret that the ruling APC appears bent on using democratic institutions such as the judiciary, INEC, and law enforcement agencies as tools of manipulation.”
The committee warned that those who allow themselves to be used against the democratic process would ultimately be held accountable for their actions, stressing that such conduct could plunge the nation into crisis.
“They must discharge their responsibilities with the fear of God and in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians,” the statement urged.
Addressing members of the PDP, the committee called for unity and steadfastness ahead of the convention, urging party faithful to resist any attempts by “fifth columnists” to create disunity.
“Now more than ever, PDP members must remain united, courageous, and committed to protecting the party’s legacy,” it said. “The PDP remains the truly national party that once provided visionary and inclusive leadership to Nigerians, as witnessed during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.”
The committee described the Jonathan era as a period marked by affordability, stability, and inclusive governance, noting that Nigerians still yearn for the return of such quality leadership.
It further disclosed that the party leadership and caucus are working tirelessly to guard against any acts of sabotage and are engaging with civil society organizations and the international community to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic values.
