Police Arrest Five Over Defilement of Minor in Bauchi
The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five men in connection with the serial defilement of a young girl in Zadawa village, Misau Local Government Area of the state. The suspects were apprehended following a report lodged at the Misau Divisional Police Headquarters on August 12, 2025.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, who issued a statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said the arrest was made after the victim’s family raised alarm over suspicious activities involving the child.
Those arrested include Muhammad Sunusi (42), Suleiman Adamu (42), Umar Adamu (45), Musa Ibrahim (40), and Shu’aibu Abubakar (47), all residents of Zadawa village. Investigations revealed that each of the suspects had, at different times, lured the minor using monetary inducements ranging from ₦200 to ₦500 before taking advantage of her.
The police disclosed that while most of the suspects admitted to giving the girl small sums of money in exchange for sexual favours, one of them—Muhammad Sunusi—made a particularly disturbing confession.
According to police findings, Sunusi revealed that he had been exploiting the victim since she was five years old. The suspect admitted to grooming the child over several years, taking advantage of her innocence whenever she played in his house with other children. His confession indicated that the abuse started subtly but gradually escalated into repeated defilement.
This shocking revelation, the Command said, underscores the long-standing vulnerability of the victim and highlights the dangers posed by predators who gain the trust of children only to exploit them later.
Following the report, the victim was promptly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Misau, where medical specialists conducted a thorough examination. The hospital’s findings confirmed that the girl had been subjected to repeated sexual abuse, with evidence consistent with her testimony and the confessions of the suspects.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, psc(+), mni, described the case as “inhuman, cruel, and utterly unacceptable in any society.” He further assured the public that the Bauchi State Command would leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice for the victim and in protecting vulnerable groups, especially children and women, across the state.
He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case, conduct a comprehensive investigation, and ensure diligent prosecution of all those involved.
In addition, the Police Command appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant over the welfare of children. The statement emphasized that many cases of child exploitation go unreported due to stigma, ignorance, or fear of reprisals, thereby enabling offenders to continue their crimes unchecked.
“The Command is calling on parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children’s movements, associates, and daily activities. Our collective vigilance is the first shield of protection for children against predators,” the statement read.
Child rights advocates in Bauchi have also reacted to the development, stressing that the case should serve as a wake-up call for both families and authorities. They urged the government to strengthen awareness campaigns on child protection, improve support systems for victims, and impose stiffer penalties on offenders to deter similar crimes.
They further noted that poverty and ignorance often make children easy targets for exploitation, as seen in this case where small sums of money were used to lure the victim.
As the investigation continues, the Bauchi State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the suspects face the full wrath of the law. The Command also pledged to collaborate with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and child protection organisations, to provide the victim with necessary support, including counseling and rehabilitation.
“The Bauchi State Police Command remains committed to its duty of protecting lives and property and will continue to fight against any act of violence, especially those directed against children,” CP Aliyu assured.
