The Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), His Royal Highness Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammed Mera, CON, Emir of Argungu, has urged the university’s pioneer graduates to uphold integrity, discipline, compassion and professionalism in their service to humanity.
The Chancellor gave the advice on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during the university’s maiden convocation ceremony, describing the occasion as a historic milestone for FUHSA, Bauchi State, the North-East region and Nigeria. He said the ceremony represented not only the graduation of students but also the beginning of a lasting legacy for the young institution.
Mera noted that FUHSA had reached the milestone ahead of other federal universities of health sciences established around the same period, describing the achievement as evidence of the dedication and commitment of the Governing Council, Management, Senate and the entire university community. He congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and his team for the accomplishment.
The Chancellor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Visitor of the University, for his leadership and commitment to tertiary education and human capital development. He commended the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON, and the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for their support and partnership with the institution, while acknowledging the contributions of other stakeholders and traditional rulers.
He further expressed gratitude to the university’s Governing Council, Management, Senate and staff for conferring on him an honorary doctorate degree, describing the recognition as a call to greater service. He pledged to continue supporting the university’s aspirations and development within the limits of his responsibilities as Chancellor.
Addressing the pioneer graduands, Mera described them as the university’s first ambassadors to the wider world, urging them to demonstrate the values acquired during their training through their character, conduct and professional service. He stressed that competence in the health professions must be accompanied by compassion and integrity, noting that patients and their families depend on health professionals for care and trust.
He also encouraged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning and apply their knowledge towards improving lives, strengthening communities and contributing to national development. He congratulated parents, guardians and families of the graduands, acknowledging their sacrifices, prayers, financial commitments and support throughout the students’ academic journeys.
Looking to the future, the Chancellor said FUHSA must aspire to become a centre of excellence in health education, medical research, innovation and service to humanity. He urged the institution to strengthen its academic programmes, attract and retain outstanding scholars, promote research addressing community needs and develop partnerships capable of enhancing its contribution to Nigeria’s health sector.
Mera expressed confidence that sustained cooperation among the Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff, students, governments, traditional institutions and other stakeholders would enable FUHSA to fulfil its mandate.
He congratulated the pioneer graduates once again, expressing hope that the maiden convocation would mark the beginning of a distinguished tradition of academic excellence, professional achievement and impactful service to humanity.
