By Auwal Hassan

Students of the Department of Political Science, Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), have embarked on an educational visit to the Federal Ministry of Defence and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja, as part of efforts to broaden their understanding of governance, national security and democratic institutions.

The delegation was led by the Director, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Centre for Peace and Security Studies, Dr. Yusuf Musa Yahaya, who accompanied the students on the educational engagement.

At the Federal Ministry of Defence, the delegation was received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. The students were presented with a paper on relevant issues within the Ministry’s mandate, after which an interactive session was held.

The students actively participated in the session, asking questions on various issues relating to national defence, security and governance. The Permanent Secretary responded to the questions, providing the students with practical insights into the workings and responsibilities of the Ministry.

The delegation later proceeded to the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), where they had a fruitful engagement with the Director of Research, Dr. Christopher O. Ngara.

The interaction focused on issues surrounding legislative studies, democratic governance and the role of research in strengthening democratic institutions. The students also had the opportunity to ask questions and engage Dr. Ngara on matters of academic and professional interest.

In his interaction with the students, Dr. Ngara encouraged them to take their academic pursuits seriously, emphasising the importance of discipline, dedication and intellectual commitment in preparing themselves for future responsibilities.

The educational visit provided the students with valuable practical exposure to key national institutions and complemented their classroom learning with firsthand insights into national security, governance, legislative studies and democratic practice.

The visit also reflects the University’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to connect academic knowledge with real-world institutional experiences and to prepare them for meaningful roles in national development.
