Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested a suspected thief and recovered roofing materials valued at ₦2.26 million following a burglary in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of the state.
The Command said the arrest was made through an intelligence-led operation after a complaint was lodged at the Azare Divisional Police Headquarters.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, said the incident was reported on Wednesday when the owner of a shop located along Kano Road, Azare, discovered that unknown persons had allegedly broken into his premises using a master key and made away with 460 metres of Stonecoat roofing sheets.
He said detectives from the Azare Division immediately launched an investigation and, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the stolen roofing materials along the Azare–Jama'are Road.
According to the police, one suspect, Muktari Rufa'i, 35, was arrested in connection with the theft.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime and identified one Evra Pizo, who is currently at large, as his accomplice.
The police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, while the recovered roofing materials have been secured as exhibits.
The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
Commending the swift response of officers attached to the Azare Division, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reaffirmed the Command's commitment to combating crime across the state.
He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to protect lives and property.
