Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested five suspects in separate operations that led to the recovery of suspected stolen property and substances believed to be cannabis within Bauchi metropolis.
The arrests were carried out by officers attached to the Command's Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) during routine patrols on August 3.
Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said the first operation took place at Doya Quarters, where a patrol team intercepted a commercial tricycle conveying three occupants on suspicion.
The suspects were identified as Sadiq Abdullahi, 27; Muhammad Suleman, 18, both of Unguwar Sarakuna, and Aliyu Abubakar, 21, the tricycle rider from Kofar Gombe.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of four boxes containing assorted new shoes, clothing and jewellery, a six-kilogramme gas cylinder, a 32-inch LG flat-screen television and a tabletop gas cooker.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation that they conspired with another suspect, identified only as "Nanu", who is currently at large, to burgle a house in Unguwar Sarakuna and steal the recovered items.
The owner of the house and his wife were later contacted by the police. The woman reportedly confirmed that she had travelled to Jos on July 31, leaving the items in her room, but discovered that some clothes and a gold earring were missing.
In a separate operation later the same day, VCRU operatives arrested two other suspects, Mansur Sani, 25, and Umar Muhammad, 30, both of Bakin Kura, Bauchi, after they were allegedly caught exchanging two parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The police said investigations into both cases are ongoing, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing burglary suspect and identify the source of the suspected illicit drugs.
The suspects are expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Commending the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reaffirmed the Command's commitment to tackling burglary, drug-related offences and other criminal activities across the state.
He also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to aid crime prevention and detection.
